A Myth About the Ovum’s Death

Understanding the process of how the pregnancy occurs from within and why sometimes it can’t happen gives a valuable insight on how you can fix the situation so that you get closer to your goal – desirable pregnancy. There’s a widespread belief among women, trying to conceive, that if basal body temperature in the 2nd phase of menstrual cycle is below 37 degrees Celsius and then rises again, this is a sign of the ovum’s death. Objectively, that’s not true. Moreover, the given fact may indicate quite the opposite processes in your organism – pregnancy. Let’s clarify the myth and all the accompanying issues.

How Long Does the Ovum Stay Alive?

There is another misconception about the ovum’s death, occurring on the 5-7th day after ovulation. Basically, this myth is not supported by any scientific substantiation. Actually, the ovum is ready for conception during 24 hours after ovulation. If conception doesn’t occur within this period, the ovum passes through the fallopian tubes and disintegrates in the womb, which is an absolutely normal phenomenon, happening every cycle when pregnancy doesn’t occur.

Short-Term Temperature Dip in the 2nd Phase: What Is It?

As you see, it’s characterized by post-ovulation rise between the 12th and 14th day, following another increase in the temperature and no significant dips afterwards. However, sometimes women report a temperature dip till the red horizontal line in the second phase, which is mistakenly taken for the ovum’s death. In reality it may be a sign of implantation of the fertilized egg, which is the earliest pregnancy sign. Implantation is embedment of the fertilized egg into the uterine wall, occurring on the 5-7th day after ovulation. This process causes rise of estrogen that leads towards a temperature dip but not the ovum’s death by any means. Here is how the chart looks:

Can Progesterone in the 2nd Phase “Kill” the Ovum?

If you have lack of progesterone in the 2nd phase, you will get undynamic basal body temperature charts with temperature difference between the 1st and the 2nd phases less than 0,2 Celsius or a very slow temperature rise. Such curves on your charts indicate hormonal disorders, while the temperature falls within just 1-2 days can’t mean hormonal imbalance. Progesterone is produced by the “yellow body” in the ovary and until implantation occurs, it can’t cause the ovum’s death since at this point of time the ovum is not connected to the mother’s organism yet. It’s traveling through the Fallopian tubes or staying in the uterine space, preparing for implantation.

Why Implantation And Pregnancy May Not Occur?

  1. There are cases when women don’t have any hormonal disorders and still can’t get pregnant. Sometimes implantation is impossible if a woman has problems with endometrium – the uterine lining. Endometrium can accept embedment of the fertilized egg only when it’s ready to provide optimal conditions for the development of the future fetus. Therefore, a woman can have perfect basal body temperature charts and still have problems with conception due to endometrial problems, which can’t be seen at the charts but only diagnosed during your appointment with a gynecologist.
  2. Sometimes the impregnation takes place, yet it’s followed by various disorders in the development of the fertilized egg. Gynecologists believe that approximately 30% of all pregnancies finish during this stage when women can’t even suspect that they are pregnant. However, this is not a precise number, because any pregnancy diagnostics as early as 5-7 days after impregnation is hardly possible.
